Earlier this year, Mead Johnson China worked alongside members of a multinational commerce and trade organization to deliver much needed material support, including clothing, bedding, hygiene products, educational materials and toys, worth over 1.2 million yuan (US $193,000) to impoverished villagers in Changyuan Village in Meizhou, China.

Soon after a deadly 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck China’s Yunnan province in August, Mead Johnson China rushed much-needed aid to the thousands of survivors in the disaster region through the China Women’s Development Foundation.
As rescuers made their way through devastated villages that dot the province, Mead Johnson donated more than 26,000 cans of formula products worth about 3 million yuan – or nearly US $490,000 – to displaced families.

Earlier this month, Mead Johnson officially opened the Mead Johnson Pediatric Nutrition Institute technology center in Guangzhou, China, marking an important milestone in our ongoing legacy of science and innovation.
As the latest link in our global R&D network, and our third such facility around the world – joining Mead Johnson Pediatric Nutrition Institute technology centers located in the U.S. and Mexico – the new center in Guangzhou will connect leading Chinese and international scientific experts to explore and advance pediatric nutrition science and its applications.

Several thousand infants in China are born with Phenylketonuria (PKU), acongenital metabolic disease affecting brain and nervous system function, every year. Many of these children are from poverty stricken families in rural areas with little access to appropriate medical treatment. While the Chinese government has been successful in developing screening programs to identify infants with PKU in the early stages, rural areas largely lack adequate products to help treat the disease.

There are nearly 30 million people living with rare diseases in the United States, another 30 million in Europe and millions more in all parts of the world. More than 60 percent of those affected are infants or children. Due to the large number of rare diseases (more than 5,000) and low prevalence of each disease, resources that lead to cures can be difficult to find.

The ceremony was attended by a number of dignitaries and government officials, key health associations, as well as Mead Johnson colleagues from China and neighboring regions.

In the aftermath of the earthquake that hit China’s Qinghai Province on April 12, we are working with China’s Red Cross Society to provide more than $100,000 in product and monetary donations. We hope that our contributions will help ease some of the suffering and help enable the people of Yushu and Qinghai to start on the road to recovery.
