  • Preparation of Feedings
    • Metabolic clinician should consult with patients about the correct amounts of water and powder for consumption. The patient's health depends on carefully following these directions.

Measure the correct amount of water into a suitable container for mixing. Then add the required amount of Phenyl-Free 2. Mix well until blended. Consume the prepared beverage immediately or cover and refrigerate. Use within 48 hours of preparation. Mix before drinking.

Throw away prepared unrefrigerated beverage left in cup within 1 hour after consumption begins.

      Powder Storage (cans)

Store cans at room temperature. After opening can, keep tightly covered, store in a dry area and use contents within 1 month. Do not freeze powder, and avoid excessive heat. Use by date on bottom of can.

      Scoop

An unpacked level scoop delivers approximately 14.4 g of powder. Store the DRY scoop in this can.

      CAUTION

This product is nutritionally incomplete. Continuing medical supervision and frequent blood tests are required. Care must be taken to provide enough phenylalanine to support growth, using other foods with this amino acid as required.

WARNING: Not for parenteral (I.V.) use.

  • Product Characteristics
    • Fat

Fat provides 19% of total calories in Phenyl-Free 2. The fat source is soy oil. Soy oil is a source of the essential omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids: linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid.

      Protein

Protein equivalents provide 22% of total calories in Phenyl-Free 2. The product provides the essential amino acids (except phenylalanine) as well as nonessential amino acids (see Amino Acids table). Care must be taken to provide enough phenylalanine from other foods to support growth and tissue maintenance. The higher protein equivalent concentration in Phenyl-Free 2 helps children and adults with PKU meet their protein needs while consuming fewer calories from the product. This, in turn, allows Phenyl-Free 2 users to consume a greater variety of foods in order to meet their phenylalanine and calorie needs.

      Carbohydrate

Carbohydrate provides 59% of total calories in Phenyl-Free 2. The carbohydrate blend is 51% sucrose (table sugar), 42% corn syrup solids and 7% modified corn starch. The sucrose in the product helps mask the taste of amino acids. Phenyl-Free 2 is suitable for someone with lactose intolerance.

      Vitamins and Minerals

Vitamin and mineral levels in Phenyl-Free 2 are generally appropriate for older children and adults. Compared to Phenyl-Free 1, Phenyl-Free 2 has higher levels of the B vitamins thiamin, vitamin B12, niacin, folic acid, pantothenic acid and biotin.
