Metabolic clinician should consult with patients about the correct amounts of water and powder for consumption. The patient's health depends on carefully following these directions.
Measure the correct amount of water into a suitable container for mixing. Then add the required amount of HCY 2. Mix well until blended. Consume the prepared beverage immediately or cover and refrigerate. Use within 48 hours of preparation. Mix before drinking.
Throw away prepared unrefrigerated beverage left in cup within 1 hour after consumption begins.
Powder Storage (cans)
Store cans at room temperature. After opening can, keep tightly covered, store in a dry area and use contents within 1 month. Do not freeze powder, and avoid excessive heat. Use by date on bottom of can.
An unpacked level scoop delivers approximately 14.5 g of powder. Store the DRY scoop in this can.
This product is nutritionally incomplete. Continuing medical supervision and frequent blood tests are required. Care must be taken to provide enough methionine to support growth, using other foods with this amino acid as required.
Nutritional powders are not sterile.
WARNING: Not for parenteral (I.V.) use.
Fat provides 19% of total calories in HCY 2. The fat source is soy oil. Soy oil is a source of essential omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids: linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid.
Protein equivalents provide 22% of total calories in HCY 2. The product provides the essential amino acids (except methionine) as well as nonessential amino acids (see Amino Acids table). Since the product is methionine-free, care must be taken to provide enough methionine from other foods to support growth and tissue maintenance. The high protein equivalent concentration in HCY 2 helps persons with homocystinuria meet their protein needs while consuming fewer calories from the product. This, in turn, allows HCY 2 users to consume a greater variety of foods in order to meet their methionine and calorie needs.
|Essential Amino Acids||Per 100 g Powder|
|Nonessential Amino Acids||Per 100 g Powder|
|Aspartic acid, mg||1760|
|Glutamic acid, mg||3500‡|
‡ Added as glutamine.
Carbohydrate provides 59% of total calories in HCY 2. The carbohydrate blend is 52% corn syrup solids, 41% sucrose (table sugar) and 7% modified corn starch. The sucrose in the product helps mask the taste of the amino acids. HCY 2 is suitable for someone with lactose intolerance.
