Mead Johnson Nutrition Unveils New Manufacturing and Research & Development Complex in Singapore

Campus expands capacity to meet growing regional demand and extends research & development capabilities

GLENVIEW, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sep. 24, 2014-- Mead Johnson Nutrition Company (NYSE: MJN), a global leader in pediatric nutrition, today formally opened the doors to its new production and research campus in Tuas, Singapore. This investment represents the single largest capital project in the company’s more than 100-year history. It has added approximately 180 new production and science positions, bringing the company’s employment total in Singapore to approximately 250, including the regional headquarters that opened two years ago.

During the ceremony, Mr. James M. Cornelius, Chairman of Mead Johnson’s Board of Directors, noted that the significant investment “is an acknowledgement of the double-digit growth in demand for the company’s products in Asia over the past decade. More importantly, the investment reflects the strong prospects for future growth and expansion in this region.”

The Tuas campus includes a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant that will supply key ingredients and products to a number of strategic, fast-growing markets in Asia. It also features the newest addition to the global network of the Mead Johnson Pediatric Nutrition Institute. The technology and learning center will add to the company’s ability to advance pediatric nutrition science and product innovation. Mr. Cornelius added, “Breakthroughs made here will help improve existing products and develop new ones to support the healthy growth and development of infants and children in Singapore, Asia and around the world.”

The new Mead Johnson facility will benefit from the combination of Singapore’s central location, robust free-market economy, strong international trade, outstanding infrastructure, and commitment to research and education.

Mr. Yeoh Keat Chuan, Managing Director of the Singapore Economic Development Board, said, “Mead Johnson’s new manufacturing and R&D investments signal the company’s confidence in Singapore to support its growth in Asia. We will continue to strengthen Singapore’s public research and development capabilities in nutrition and food science as well as technology to augment the R&D efforts of companies here.”

As a global leader in pediatric nutrition, Mead Johnson has hundreds of medical, scientific and technical experts around the world seeking to better understand the strong connection between early-life nutrition and long-term health outcomes. Their explorations and discoveries support the innovations and health benefits that change the lives of babies and children for the better every day.

Mr. Kasper Jakobsen, Mead Johnson’s President and Chief Executive Officer, stated, “For more than a century, we have been committed to helping provide infants and young children with the best start in life. Millions of babies worldwide have depended on our routine formulas and toddler products. And hundreds of thousands are thriving today because of our innovative specialty formulas that address serious allergies, diseases and metabolic disorders.”

Mead Johnson is also committed to being a responsible corporate citizen. As part of its focus on the environment, the company is engaged in a long-term effort to sharply reduce the amount of waste from its production facilities that goes to landfill. The Tuas plant is boosting those efforts by not sending even a single load of waste to landfill during its first four months of operation. The company has announced its intention to maintain Tuas as a “Zero Landfill” operation.

The company has a long legacy of giving back to the communities in which it operates. Its philanthropic activities are united under the banner of “A Child’s Best Start” – focused on supporting infants, children and mothers in fragile and vulnerable circumstances. As part of the grand opening celebration, the company announced that it is making charitable donations to two Singapore institutions – Club Rainbow, which provides comprehensive assistance to children who suffer from chronic and life-threatening illnesses and their families, and Sanctuary House, a shelter for young, single mothers and their babies and young children.

“We are proud to extend the Mead Johnson circle of care here in Singapore and pleased to help advance the good works of both organizations for the benefit of local families in need,” stated Mr. Jakobsen. “Although Mead Johnson has been serving the families of the ‘Lion City’ for nearly 45 years, today marks the start of an even deeper connection and potential for mutual gains.”
