Mead Johnson Nutrition Announces Plans to Build Manufacturing Plant in Singapore

Company to make $325 million investment to meet future demand in Asia

GLENVIEW, Ill.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 7, 2011-- Mead Johnson Nutrition (NYSE: MJN) today announced its decision to build a new manufacturing and technology center in Singapore. The project is the biggest capital expenditure in the company’s history and is needed to support future growth in its fast-growing business across the Asia region. The total project cost of $325 million is comprised of $300 million in capital spending and $25 million in expenses. The plant is expected to be fully operational in mid-2014.

“The new facility is needed to meet future demand for Mead Johnson products and will enable us to better serve our customers across Asia. This significant investment includes the company’s first spray dryer in Asia, which will strengthen our regional supply chain and help improve our overall operating efficiency,” said Jeffrey Jobe, Senior Vice President – Global Supply Chain. “Demand for our products across Asia has been increasing at a double-digit rate for the past decade, and future prospects remain strong.”

In addition to the production staff required to operate the new spray dryer, a number of management and technical positions will be relocated to Singapore to support the new facilities. Some of those required positions will be new hires in Singapore, and the remaining personnel will be transferred from other MJN locations.

“Mead Johnson has been a leader in pediatric nutrition in Asia for over 40 years. Beyond additional capacity, these new facilities will also bring important technologies and capabilities closer to the Asian markets they serve,” noted Steve Golsby, President & CEO. “By co-locating senior leadership and various supply chain, marketing and R&D staff in Singapore, we will ensure that our regional strategies and innovation are executed with excellence – increasing speed to market and being even more responsive to local and regional consumer needs.”

“This new investment reinforces Mead Johnson’s singular commitment to create innovative pediatric nutrition products, with an uncompromising dedication to scientific rigor, product quality and meaningful consumer benefits,” concluded Golsby, “and puts us in an even stronger position to drive outstanding business performance and deliver on our mission of nourishing the world’s children for the best start in life.”
