Our Environmental Responsibilities

Mead Johnson’s commitment to the global community goes beyond the development of safe, healthy products to include environmentally-friendly packaging. For example, our Enfamil® reusable tub and refill system in the United States offers the potential for significant reduction in the carbon footprint of the packaging involved – up to 35 percent less packaging materials, 60 percent less energy and 50 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Mead Johnson Environmental Standards

Mead Johnson works to protect the environment today to help create a better world tomorrow. To that end, we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our business and products over the long term:

  • We strive to use pollution prevention and environmental best practices in all we do – including risk assessment, training and action planning.
  • We incorporate environmental considerations into our business operations and review process.
  • We carefully consider our choices of raw materials and promote efficient use of materials and resources in our facilities around the world.
  • We reduce waste through re-use and recycling. We seek to purchase recycled, recyclable or re-furbished materials when they are available, economical and suitable.
  • We operate in compliance with all relevant environmental legislation, regulations, codes of practice and other standards wherever we operate.  In areas where no regulations exist, we will establish our own stringent standards and targets.
  • We work in partnership on environmental issues with our customers, suppliers and local communities in which we operate.
  • We promote environmental stewardship among our employees and encourage them to work in an environmentally responsible manner.
  • We review and update our environmental goals on an annual basis and also track our performance against multi-year targets for improvement.  We regularly share information on our environmental initiatives as appropriate.
  • We review this environmental policy statement each year to ensure it remains relevant and effective and make it available to the public.

These goals will be the basis for future updates and progress reports.

Collaborating on Environmental Initiatives

Mead Johnson works closely with business partners, regulatory agencies and local communities to identify and apply business best practices.

  • In Evansville, Indiana, the company is using landfill gas to replace most of the natural gas previously used. According to estimates using the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, the project is reducing net carbon dioxide greenhouse gas emissions by 24,000 metric tons per year. Annual benefits are equivalent to removing emissions from 4,400 passenger vehicles or the carbon absorbed by 5,500 acres of pine forests.
  • Mead Johnson is a member of the U.S. EPA’s Climate Wise and Energy Star Program, offering industry resources to better manage energy and improve the environment and participates in the U.S. EPA’s WasteWise Program, which is dedicated to re-use, recycling and reducing waste.
